CHN 113 Modern Chinese: Reading & Discussion
Jiao Li
CHN113 Modern Chinese Reading & Discussion is the third part of a year-long third-year Chinese course. The primary goal of this course is to further prepare you to function effectively and accurately in Chinese-speaking environments. The course focuses on all four communication skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and intends to improve your Chinese to the Intermediate-High or Advanced-Low level formulated by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). Building on CHN112, CHN113 will further introduce several dozens of grammatical patterns and functional words, and will add around 600 words to your Chinese vocabulary list. Students will read both dialogues and newspaper articles pertaining to a variety of issues in contemporary China and discuss the ethical, moral, aesthetic, social, and cultural concerns of the Chinese that relate to these issues. In addition, we will further the study of the conversion of traditional and simplified characters and debate skills in Chinese.
