Course Description: This is an introduction to spoken and written Japanese in cultural contexts, with emphasis on communication.

Course Placement: Students who have successfully completed, with a C- or better, Japanese 2 or 3 in the 10th or higher grade in high school may receive unit credit for this course on a P/NP grading basis only. Although a passing grade will be charged to the student's P/NP option, no petition is required. All other students will receive a letter grade unless a P/NP petition is filed. Course Description: Japanese 4 is the first of the three 2nd-year courses in which students are expected to further develop their basic language skills, and continue to learn about Japanese culture and society. Students will learn to communicate in Japanese effectively using a variety of more complex, sophisticated functions and strategies. The students will study Chapter 1 - Chapter 4 of Nakama II by Seiichi Makino (Houghton Mifflin). The students will continue to build up their kanji knowledge and learn to express intentions, opinions, degrees of politeness in requests, unacceptable actions, obligations, conditions, etc.

Prerequisite: course 3 (with a grade of a C- or better) or be placed into this level by a placement test. For more information about course placement, please click HERE.
